Keith Haring Gesture Paintings (Day 1) – Roll a Haring

Keith Haring was an artist who began his career by drawing chalk drawings on the empty advertising frames of the New York Subway. He was very prolific during his short life and his iconic figures can be found on murals, paintings, T-Shirts, and prints.

At first my students kind of reacted like: Are you really going to teach us about graffiti??? Isn’t that illegal???

But I had total buy-in from the class and lots of parents said their kids were drawing Keith Haring Style figures at home.

Keith Haring Biography

I began by showing the students this presentation and talking about how Haring was influenced by all the subway graffiti he saw when he moved to New York.

Next I gave everyone dice, a stick of chalk, and a piece of black construction paper.  I used the Roll a Haring game that I found on Teachers Pay Teachers and the kids made their own subway drawing as a warm up for their paintings.
