How to Roll a Coil and Create the Base of a Coil Built Pot

A few weeks ago, I wrote about teaching basic ceramics procedures and said I’d be back in a few days, but it has been much longer than that.

This year, I’m having my students make little planters. I have been telling my students that they are my seeds it is my job to nurture them and make sure they can grow into the wonderful adults they will become. I also told them that these pots will be a reminder of how I want to care for each and every one of them while they are in my class.

We start by learning how to roll a coil, which is great skill that can be applied to so many hand built projects.  Next, students turn the coil into the base of their pot.  We have 40 min class periods, so this is all we can get done before we need to clean up.
